The Mustang was completely redesigned for 1967. It was longer, and wider but it did have the same 108 inch wheel base of its predecessor. The grille opening was enlarged for a decidedly meaner look, while the rear taillight panel was concave. The fastback became a full fastback, and simulated rear quarter panel scoops were used on all three body styles.
The front suspension was widened and redesigned which resulted in a better ride. The optional front disc brakes came with power assist and the 1967 Mustang was the first to use a dual hydraulic brake system. Actually, all U.S. built cars had to have such a system as it mandated by the government.
Engine selection remained the same as in 1966- but with one major exception. The 390 c.i. big block, rated at 320 hp, gave a serious performance boost to the Mustang. This brought a higher level of acceleration to the Mustang at the expense of handling. The 390 weighed about 300 lbs more than the 289 and all of the weight was on the front wheels- resulting in about a 59%/41% f/r weight ratio. This isn't as bad as it sounds as a typical front wheel drive car of today has a typical 65%/35% ratio. A total of 28,800 Mustangs were equipped with the 390. The 390 could be had with or without the GT Equipment Group.
The previous hot-shot, the 271 hp 289 V-8s popularity waned, as only 472 were built. The GT Equipment Group option was still a mandatory option with the 271 hp 289 engine.
The premier performance Mustang was the GT equipped with the 390 c.i. V-8. The GT Equipment Group consisted of the grille mounted fog lamps. power front disc brakes, dual exhausts with chrome quad outlets (excluded on the 200 hp 289) F70x14 tires, GT gas cap, the handling package, rocker panel stripes and GT or GTA (for automatic transmission equipped GTs) emblems. A total of 24,079 Mustangs were equipped with the GT option.
The interior for 1967 was also redesigned. Most noticeable was the new dash, which featured integral air conditioning. The Tilt Away steering wheel was a new option, as was the fold-down rear seat option on the fastback. Other new options included cruise control, a folding glass rear window on the convertibles and an Exterior Decor Group which included a hood with rear-facing louvers that housed turn signal indicators, wheel well moldings and a pop open gas cap.

With the introduction of Chevy's Camaro, Pontiac's Firebird, and Ford's sister division 2+2, the Mercury Cougar, the rest of the industry both brought serious competition to the Mustang and further legitimized the 2+2 'ponycar' market. Ford foresaw the coming competition, and designed the 1967 Mustang to accommodate its 390 cubic-inch V8. In addition to the mechanical changes, the Mustang was restyled inside and out. This began the era of the growing Mustang, as it gained a couple inches in length and width nearly every year until 1973. A GT 350 H was introduced, a special edition made specifically for Hertz Rent-A-Car outlets. Stories of 'Rent-A-Racers' being returned with telltale signs of racing use are still told today. The options list grew as well, and Ford's largest engine quickly went from the 390 to the 428 Cobra Jet. Shelby also upped the ante with the GT 500 in 1967.
In 1967 the Mustang body style was altered which meant there was more room in the engine bay. This was also the first year for the GT500 which boasted a 428 cubic-inch engine in true Shelby fashion producing more than 350 horsepower. The GT500 was given a unique front end with hood scoops and center mounted lights. The back of the car borrowed many components from the Thunderbird including the rear quarter scoops, sequential turn signals and the rear spoiler.
Shelby lost the lease for their factory at Los Angeles International Airport near the close of 1967 so operations were moved the Ionia, Michigan under the control of the Ford Motor Company
The GT Equipment Group included the grille mounted fog lamps, power front disc brakes, dual exhausts with chrome quad outlets which were excluded on the 289hp 289, GT gas cap, F70x14 tires, handling package, rocker panel stripes, and GT or GTA (for auto transmission equipped GTs) emblems. 24,079 Mustangs had the GT option. Only with the GT Group was the Competition Handling Package available which consisted of firmer suspension components, limited slip rear axle and fifteen-inch wheels with wire wheel covers.
The interior on the '67 Mustang was redesigned. A new dash was added, which had the Rally-Pac and also integral air conditioning. Two new options were the tilt-away steering wheel and fold-down rear seat on the fastback model. Also added to the option list included cruise control, a folding glass rear window on the convertibles and an Exterior Decor group including a hood with rear-facing louvers that contained turn signal indicators, wheelwell moldings as well as a pop-open gas cap. The galloping Pony inserts were not included in the Interior Decor Group option.
The standard wheel covers on the '67 was a 10½ inch hubcap or a 21-spoke wheel cover. The optional styled steel wheel were wider with a wider trim ring and had a blue center cap
Continuing from the previous Mustangs was a long list of dealer-installed options which included the Cobra kits.
