In true gearhead fashion I tossed a turned all night trying to come up with a plan to find the problem.. When everyone asked what I thought broke at the track I kept saying "driverside differential output shaft"
This afternoon me and my son Gavin got busy tearing it down to see what the damage was. Low and behold it was the driver output shaft.
Here are some pics..

This is the passenger side view of the output shaft and how it protrudes out the middle of the diff. This is how it should look.

,and this is the Driverside view of the Broken off output shaft. and the other part as you can see from next few pics is broke off into the axle.

sucks man. all them horsies and torques no good for nemesissy...do they make all kinds of aftermarket axles etc? i have no clue of anything to do with a vette. hince the stupid question of aftermarket parts.

The C5 Corvette's like mine have a very weak output shaft design.. They improved it with the C6 Vette and there is a aftermarket 300m Hardened output shaft option. Here is a pic to show what I speak of..

Going with the LPE 300M? What kind of torque do you think requires it and you seemed to be pretty intent on breaking your own build on near slicks. hence why or was it just to test the limits of your build?

What kind of rwtq does a Trophystock start strengthening the rear ass of the vehicle. lol. Really my question was purely scientific, asking Gary about the torque limits of NEMESIS as a mechanical system. He knows it far better than my clean jeans racing and I'd like to learn to get to the dirty panty's phase :-)

Stalled Auto. Big difference in the drivetrain "shock" department.

It has often been stated that a full throttle start in an automatic car is easier on the drive line then a normal start in a manual tranny one. The shock to the drive train is simply incredible with a stick. The real kicker is it looked like the car was really going to hook, and that was a motor pass if I am not mistaken.

You're mistaken on that one Charles. Guns loaded.
Anyone see the poof of white smoke come out the back right as the car jumps forward?

First time at the track, should have made about 3 or 4 shakedown motor passes first. Just sucks he didn't get to run the car more, looks good on the trailer though.

Here are some progress pics.. think most explain them selves. Got 10 hours in this tear down.. Not to bad considering the amount of work it takes for a Corvette.. Headers have to come off on my car to get the Torque tube out the clutch. Pull the TT , Transmission, rear diff and rear Cradle all as one unit. Then separate it all when its down. Anyways here are few pics.

Here is a pic of a Retaining block that must be removed to get the whole gear set out of the differential.
http://i310.photobucket.com/albums/kk433/NEMESISFRC/DSC00538.jpg
You have to Double nut this stud to get it out and then a few allen bolts need to be removed to get the retaining block out. Pics below.

Funny thing happens when you break your car at the track... You start to Question things, like is this the right car to dump money and time into to make it a drag car? Should I build the rear diff. to the gills? Should I just upgrade the broken output shaft? Should I have the transmission looked at? Should I have the Transmission upgraded and built up? Should I dump the manual all together and put a Automatic in it?
I could go on for days with all the Questions that are running threw my head.. Really thinking about selling the car all together and building a MonteCarlo SS. Im just to burned out on car modding to take on another ground up project.. This Sucks!!
The EnforceR
06-20-2010, 03:54 PM
YOu said it yourself, you want a car that can go to shows/cruise ins, run a road course, and run at the track. No need to stray from that goal. I don't think you would enjoy an auto in it...as much as it's driven and also the road course deal you want to tackle. I wouldn't go all out bullet-proof on the upgraded parts, but I would certainly go as deep as you need to ensure that this part of the car should not have to be redone again in the near future.
Break one part, replace it with something that you are almost certain won't tear up again. Because once it DOES break in the future, you realize you should've spent the tad bit of extra money to ensure you wouldn't be re-visiting this srea of the car again. I say all that using common sense, but I haven't really followed that logic with my car either lol. I spun a bearing, and left the entire rotating assembly in the motor minus the crank lol. I was also on a far limited budget than I believe you are, so that's my .02.
Green to da Bean
06-20-2010, 04:30 PM
With a manual there is no ensuring you wont visit that area again. It may just take longer, but trust me (and ask me how I know), its still going to break.

Gary, you'd be crazy to sell this car after all the blood, sweat, tears and money you've put into it. Plus, you've said it a thousand times, you never intended on it being a track car. I agree that you need to upgrade the weak links in the trans/rear, but you don't have to buy the best and most expensive parts you can find. After that, your car won't be "bulletproof" but it is unlikely that you will be back in it replacing something that broke every couple track visits.
If you want a car that will ET, start on the monte. You've got a street king in the FRC. Let it do what it does best.

Thanks guys.. Ya your right David.. its disheartening though.. I've been down this road before with the failure's of the first 2 engine builds.. So I can take it. Just brings me to Question the NEMESIS. Seems the advise I have gotten from those of you I have spoke with is the same thing I think to be my best plan of attack.. Upgrade the output shaft with a Hardened set.
MrDavid
06-20-2010, 06:34 PM
With minor upgrades to the drivetrain you can have fun at the track with "less" worry and be even more confident in it when taking names Mexico. Matter of fact, its been a while since Nemesis has claimed another victim in Mexico.....

Keep the 6speed, upgrade the output shafts, got the rear diff. braces, slide the clutch with leaving, and give it the squeeze before the 60ft and have fun! Can't try to kill it man.

This is a Z Grip Textraillia clutch.. Ive said it many times.. I did try and slip it.. the material is to tough.. Its a light switch.. OFF OR ON. I know how to Slip and Squeeze; just some times it just Grabs and thats what she did Friday.. If you watch the Video you can see me sit for a sec before going.. I actually started the slow release of the clutch on the 3rd Yellow and slowly let of the clutch and BAM!! it grabed and the car dead hooked!..

Gary i hear the waabulance coming down the street after you man! SHit of all the hell and motors rear ends clutches spending 10g at hawks on a motor and about 6g on this last engine plus the 2g for the 9inch i have thought of selling my car over and over again. Its self pity man> Get those balls out that u have sat somewere and put that thing together! my god man i wish i could give u all the grief ive had in camaros alone after having 3 totalled within 6 years and having a ss that i have maybe put 25,000 miles on since i bought it 4 years ago.
YOu know as well as i do cars are not reliable not matter what. Hence why we call this car thing a hobby. lol Not a job. if the car is becoming a job take the loss and move on to upgrade(as i did) and just get it to the point of what brings the enjoyment out of the vehicle to u. DAMN!

Man I dont know!! lol... Im going to order a aftermarket hardened output shaft to replace the broke one.. also new seals gaskets ect.. also that busted belleville ring.. and put it all back together.
The one thing that got me pissed today was the broken of part of the output shaft that has yet to be pictured, its stuck in the axle.. Well I was working hard on getting it out of the axle and it pushed further into the axle and I guess it pushed out a seal and now all the dop came gushing out!!!! @#$%^&*&^%$^$!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FUWKKKKKKKK!!!!!.. Dont know what to do bout that... Guess I have to buy a whole new axle or figure out how to separate it and get that piece out and refill it?

Hella strong magnet might work, but seems like it would magnetize the whole thing also depending on whats made of what. Or perhaps just piece metal with flat end skinny enough fit down there, throw some super glue on end of it gently pull it out?Air pressure from opposite end, if possible?

Id say get 3 that suppose to lift 8lbs, bind them together, hit the surface with all three slowly work it out. If not take em back. Then move on to glue/weld/adhesive but that be my last option just because MAY leave crap in there
