View Full Version : New project car...'68 Pontiac Catalina

Well, the Nova is on Ebay as we speak and the reserve will probably be met tomorrow night, so out with the old and in with the new. Dad found a '68 Pontiac Catalina on Ebay that caught his eye.....so we drove up to Conover, NC today to check it out. After 45 minutes he drove it on home!

The car is an original, unmolester car with 43k actual miles. Has factory cold blowing A/C, all gauges work, cig lighter intact and working, AM radio works still. Doors and trunk shut like a brand new car. The door panels and instruments on the car will be in pristine origianl condition with light cleaning. A/C controls still change colors from blue to orange as you turn the knob. Original manual still in the glove box, all the little stuff like that you expect to find in an all original untouched car. All we had to do was charge the battery and the car cruised at 80 mph all the way from with a hiccup. It's a freakin tank and just glides down the road!

The original owner had the car and decided to do a color change on the paint, even though the original paint was still in great shape. In the process, the owner died and the car sat in a basement for a while, hence the surface rust. An auction company got a hold of the car from the estate sale. This is who we purchased the car from today. All it needs is a MAJOR cleanup under the hood.....a little interior work that will be easy, and paint. We plan to paint it a two toned combo that will match the interior color, lower it or do air ride, and put 20s on it. Any tips, suggestions, comments throw em at me! I think this will make a cool little cruise-in car for sure, and should only take a few months to get it ready!

I know right? it barely fits under our carport, and we don't even know if it will go in the garage haha. It should be fun though, you def don't see many of these, and I think with good paint, air ride, and big wheels it will be a nice little cruiser! For the price it would have been dumb to pass it up.

Any suggestions for paint? We want two-toned.....and needs to match the interior color.

A blue and silver two tone would probably be a nice look for that boat of a car. And maybe split if with a lime green stripe. my 2 cents. Blue on top and silver on bottom. but on a different note didnt Chris Farley drive a catalina converterable in the movie "Black Sheep"?

The EnforceR
04-25-2010, 09:22 AM
Thats actually what we were thinking about.....blue/silver but separate it with a thin red pinstripe.

MIKE02TA
04-25-2010, 09:25 AM
Gotcha, just have seen more green stripes with that combo than a red, but would probably be nice also. You said yall will probably put 20's on it? Chrome or Polished Aluminum???

The EnforceR
04-25-2010, 09:45 AM
Not sure....just kinda one of those things that depends on what we run across and like lol. Def dont wanna be polishing on 20s though, so chrome is preferred.

MIKE02TA

Chrome would be real nice with those colors and also with that big of a car!!!!

It fired right up, and cruised at 75-80 on the interstate the whole time without skipping a beat. Dad was in amazed at how well it drove. Signals work, brake lights, wipers, everything. Wheels cylinders need rebuuilding though, needs new shocks, , new battery, but other than that it is mechanically sound.

that car is in pretty dang good shape to be an original unmolested one. all the hvac knobs and stuff still look great.

The EnforceR
04-25-2010, 12:23 PM
Yea...most people are too ignorant to see that kind of stuff and just look at the car at first glance and think "man that thing is rough." It won't take much at all to get it back. Most of the bodywork has been done, car is striaght, and really isn't far away from being able to paint as it sits now.

Exactly what I was thinking, divide the colors where the body side moulding is now, and shave the moulding.

A couple of bumpers, some stitching on the inside, some fresh paint, and slam it on dubs. Sounds like a plan to me. All the details of the car like the interior chrome and all looks great. I can't believe the a-c still works. Looks like a nice car to start with.

Take all the glass out and drop it off to me and let me tint it while the car is being painted. That is a must.

We are probably going to split the color at the body line where the tpps of the fenders and quarters are.....but might go your route too. Also contemplating painting the bumpers body color since it will be REALLY high$$$ to get them rechromed, and also a pain to remove. Also really leaning towards an air-ride system right now as well, we will hafta measure and see if it can even be lowered on 20s that far to need air ride. Prob gonna just dye the carpet back as well, as an aftermarket carpet won't ever fit as snug and perfect as this one does.

We will for sure give you the call if we decide to tint the windows in it! its a lotttt of glass!

am i the only one that thinks that thing is pretty ugly? no offense, but the nova is way cooler. but, its not my money, so, have fun and enjoy.

Yea it is ugly right now, I'll be the first one to say it. Half the old cars out there start out ugly though. I'm gonna get someone to play around with photoshop and so I can get an idea of how this will look.

Today, trailer hitch was removed, wheels cylinders rebuilt, car was tuned up, and new shocks installed.

I'm 100% sure out of all these big cars sitting low on big wheels (going trend now), not half of them were a "WTF is that?" kinda car when it started. THat's the fun of it.....take something that looks like garbage and make it rolling art!

i think some people consider many cars ugly simply because they have never seen them. everybody and their sister has a 1st gen camaro, mustang, chevelle, nova, etc.... and thats all anyone sees in magazines and stuff. so when they see different cars they label it as ugly.
we witnessed it at the car shows as well. people would trip over our blue 442 to check out the lesser-quality/condition red chevelle next to it. and if the judging was popular vote by the people, you could guarrantee the red car would beat us every time.
anytime a car is redesigned, half the public will call it hideous the first 2 years until they get used to it.

might wanna invest in some racing oil with zdp. the standard oil now is very tough on the flat tappet cams. they removed stuff that was important for the flat tappets in order to be more friendly to catalytic converters. everything now is roller.

i hate most of the 1st gen cars due to the "best looking cars every made" attitude people have about them. people that usually own 1st gen camaros and chevelles are just as bad as the guys with vettes that act like there ish dont stink. i went to the hardware store the other day to pickup a bolt and there was a 69 camaro sitting there as i pulled up. i simply told the guy he had a nice car and got the reply "yea i know". i want to reach over and slap that SOB. i have always loved chevy 2s and camaros but ive always had that soft spot for the big boat 4 door that no one wants. those are my kinda cars lol.

Grey above the paint line

Or a thin grey stripe going down the side with some sort of texture to it (like a granite look)

Shon, not sure what wheels those are, they are similar but that lip is a lot deeper. The wheels is a Coy's C57, pictured below. The company is faily new, and offers decent loooking wheels for the hot rodder and muscle car folks that are pretty cheap in comparison to the others. They are nothing like the high end billet wheels, but its a good wheel for cars on a budget, and all the aluminum is clearcoated for easy maintenance. The Nova had Coys wheels on it as well.

A friend of his (and a very picky one with NICE stuff at that) recommended a guy up above Lake Bowen Near NC. He picked the car up last week and now has the car completely stripped down to the metal. A little bondo was in the rear quarters, but other than that it is rock solid. We went to look at it tonight and find the car in a junky old garage with dirt floor. WTF? And he plans to paint the thing in here as well. Oh well...we have seen his work and it all looked great, so I guess whatever trash gets in it, he can cut and buff it out. He's on schedule and thinks the car will be done in 3 weeks. On to pics....

hamBurger panel soon to come. And I'm not kidding haha..

What is it you see? Lol I wouldn't know them if I saw them....I don't know ish about bodywork. the only "body work" that has really been done is putting mud on the drive side...everything else has just been getting it down to metal. All I know is this guy has done this for a living for 26 years, and does side work at his house. I was very surprised to see his "facility" after I have saw some of his work in person, he's done some of the nicest work around, for some of the most picky hot rod guys around too. We shall see I guess. I am kinda concerned about the buffing process though, with all the dust and what not in the building. Time will tell!

looks like he used a pretty aggressive grit on his sanding... which can be hard to cover up/get rid of. i dont paint cars for a living though, so i donno what they normally do. i will say on the things that i paint its a p.i.t.a. to work on top of heavy sanding cuts.

He said he was going to use an etching primer and it will fill it all in.

Yea, I'm just anxious to see how it turns out. Once it's back, it'll go to trim, and then stereo shop, and then ready for the cruise-ins hopefully in Early August. Also, gotta replace the a/c compressor, it's locked up.

If this is the same guy that I am thinking about...he really does do some good work. I had heard about his "shop", but never seen it in person.

He lives on Hwy 9 up above Little Africa, just a little way from the NC line. His name is Daniel Edwards.

As you would expect from a guy who does this on the side, we keep hearing (it will be done in 2 weeks I've just been real busy). So....he's still saying 2 weeks from now lol. We ordered new carpet yesterday and are brainstorming how we want the seats to looks. We got a charcoal looking carpet, and the seats will be two toned (blue like door panels and grey like carpet, wheels, and paint).

UPDATE

Well, as expected....it's taking longer than expected for the car to get finished. The car has been in primer all week getting blocked and all the final stuff done before being sprayed. Today, he sprayed sprayed the jams, under hood, under trunk, etc. The two-tone is being carried into the jams too so it should look nice.

We have the stereo ready to go in. Gonna go with Kicker 6x9s in the back, and a single Kicker 4x10 in the front. Sony headunit. Not sure if we are gonna get a 4 channel amp to power them, or just run it off the head unit. Also, some of the glass is gonna be sent to Hughey so he can start tinting it. Once it's back from paint, things should go like this...

-Interior (replacing carpet and redoing all the seats two-toned like the paint)
-Wheels/Tires (wheels already ordering, just waiting till its back to see what size tires will tuck)
-Get A/C working
-Window tint
-engine bay touchup
-DONE.

Maybe sometime in September I can drive it out and show ya'll, just maybe.

Went and checked on the car tonight. It should be in full color in a week or so. He's gonna block it once more and then spray the rest. The colors look a little off due to bad lighting, but here's some shots...also dropped off a few windows with Hughey tonight to let him work some 30% tint magic! The jams weren't prepped as good as we would've like, can still see some sanding marks...but their just doors jams and it's not gonna be a show car or anything. Also, it's odd the way he did the two-tone in the jams, but he says it's gonna look OK.

Well....the car now has paint! It is very orange peely as you can see, and needs to be touched up in some spots and completely cut and buffed....but the color is there and I'm pleased with it. The bumpers are being sprayed tonight (grey to match lower half). We hope to pick it up next weekend and drive it home. Only thing we may change, is have a very thin pinstripe hand painted between the orange and the body colors...maybe lime green or soemthing wild like that. Here's the pics...sorry....the sun wasn't out until we left, so the car doesn't have that good shine to it!
