View Full Version : LS1 Head/Cam package idea...

Just kind of testing the waters with this idea.
I have a set of heads that I am going to port/polish myself, then take the heads to a machine shop to have them decked, 5 angle valve job and flowed.
I will then assemble them with Comp Cams 978 dual valve springs (good to .650 lift), new valve stem seals and new steel retainers.
Along with the pair of heads I will be selling a custom grind cam (RPM-6) the specs are 242/248 .612/.615 114 lsa.
To give you an idea of the power that cam puts down:
Stock LS1
Stock heads
Long tubes
True Duals
Intake
Pulley
Ported TB/MAF
Automatic
8.8 Ford Rear end

It put down 347rwhp/365tq unlocked and that was on a Mustang Dyno. (Figure around 360-375 on a Dynojet)

That is pretty impressive for a cam only car!
Now add some better flowing heads to the mix, proper tuning and you have yourself a 400rwhp+ car easily. :D

I am planning on selling this head/cam package for $1500 (uninstalled, for installed price it will have to depend on the situation, parts needed and so on.)

I was wanting to know what you guys thought of that price. I think that is pretty reasonable. :D

Doesn't sound unreasonable at all to me.

I hate to be the one to knock something, but.....

For the size of that cam, I would hope it put down more than that. I put down 400 to the rear wheels w/cam only and decked heads(make up for piston valve reliefs, -4cc, forged motor). I have full bolt-ons and everything, but still. My cam has 12 degrees less intake and 16 degrees less exhaust, and only has ~600 lift on both sides.

Brandon runs a cam almost that same size in a 408, and it idles beautifully and puts down 470rwhp w/stock heads and an LS6 intake.

I think thats a real fair price for a setup, no doubt, but you may want to re-evaluate the cam choice, especially for a 346.

I agree, it didn't put down a huge number on his car but if you were to run that cam through a M6 with a stock rear end (which is considerably less weight than a Ford 8.8 inch rear) then 400rwhp is easily reachable on a cam only car. :D

The only reason that cam is part of the package is because it is the only cam I have that is currently sitting on the shelf.
I have a smaller one on the way, but that is going in the wife's car.

Ok I really want to do a H/C swap on my car, I haven't looked much into prices and etc...I would love to install myself as I have all the tools and the experience to do so. (former GM Tech) But I have no garage etc...If lets say when I get my tax return etc...and a little cash gathered up in the next couple months. If I buy a h/c setup would somebody be willing to help(provide garage) with install etc...I live in IL remember that.

If you were willing to make the drive to Nashville, I can rent out my time and space for ya. :D
I can even supply the spare guest room for ya.
Of course I will need to run you through a thorough background check first. :D

Just visiting here from 3rdgen.org, it's good to see that LS1 guys arguing about rear wheel dyno numbers is universal

lol.....no arguement here, just pointing something out.

rwhp is only one measurement of a cars potential/power fwiw, but since its the only one he posted its the only one i could comment about ;)

I have been tempted to stick that cam in the wife's car and throw it on the dyno to see what a cam only M6 car will put done with that cam.
But with her heavy foot, it probably wouldn't be a great idea.

If I come across another used cam though, I will definitely snag it.
That way I can offer more than one choice.

All the bolt ons F11 cam through a 4.10's in a stock 10 bolt 408/390,. Alan Futral did the tune. It runs like stink and on Nitto's with my lame ass driving on a 1.9/2.0 60ft 12.3's/12.4's @116-117 mph. Just #'s

Those are some great numbers! :D

I was looking at the specs of the cam I posted and realized that I put up the wrong one.
That is the cam I have in Rally right now, the one on the shelf is a little different.
I want to say it is a 246/248 .615/.615 117LSA +0
It's a sleeper cam. :D
It was made for a cam only Nitrous car and I just realized that I do not have HP numbers for what he put down with this cam on the spray.
He did mention that the cam sounds completely stock though. Almost no lope compared to a stock cam. It was very "daily driver" friendly.
