whoooops my bad i thought it was you who just bought hugheys 98 ss.

but anywho no matter what obd system if the light is coming on see what its for then you can go from there. its hard to tell right off the back what would cause it.

is it running hot? check guages light come on also? If not, Id guess
a)faulty fan relay
b) whoever you bought it from might have mickey moused the relay
c) opti... definately opti going out

Id lean toward something being mickey moused, as Ive never heard of a fan relay tripping ses (might just never heard and mine had went out). You sure its not just coming on at higher temp, and fans come on around then anyway? If your coolant temp sensor went out it be giving alot more issues than just a light.Honestly though wouldnt be bad investment to get ob1/obd2 reader off ebay. I got one for like 55$ shippied, just be advised if its a 94/95 still gotta do the crazy jumping thing www.shbox.com/1/xraycable.jpg if its a 93 you can get it to display codes without a reader

yes they do, its just a pita to use... tell them to stop being lazy and get out the rest of the connectors.

DAMNIT CLICKING EDIT INSTEAD OF QUOTE FTL lol! Autozone in mauldin didnt. I got them to get it out the back before I ordered one. It was straight obd2, didnt even have interchangeable connections for older models

I have one if you dont want to order one, but im sure someone has one closer to you in spartanburg

its not running hot at all and the check gauge is not comming on just the ses light is the only one though

Best bet run codes then go from there.Poke around with an ohm meter, or switch out your fan relay with one you know good

EDIT= I just saw in your other thread stating that SES light comes on when driving yet off at stop. This leads me to think it probably has nothing to do with your fan. Being thats ideal time fan would be coming on,stopped without airflow. If you cant feel it running bad, probably something simple check/clean your egr, could be 02 sensor, cat, maybe vacuum leak we could all guess forever lol. Also seafoam is awesome at cleaning up carbon but i had to replace a headgasket shortly after ( higher mileage also) and I didnt even dump it in through vacuum just used their deep creep which is sprayed into intake.

yeah the cat is gone off the car but i am going to call around tomm and find somebody that has a obd 1 scanner and have them pull the codes and see whats going on and i think i need to replace my opti to beacsue at high rpms around 5000 or 5500 it starts to break up so thats the plan for next week and how hard is it to change the opti ?

LMAO at this thread!!! The SES light coming on and off is probably caused by a bad ground or whatever if it isn't throwing any codes.

Seafoam thru the vacume in the intake is so it can clean the valves and pistons.
Deep creep is to clean the TB.

Breaking up at 5500 could be you actully hitting the rev limiter if not tuned and could be caused by gauge lagging you thinking your at 55 and realy at 5750. If thats not the case could be caused by bad plugs, wires, coil, opti., fuel pump, fuel filter. Its really easy to just point the finger at the opti lol.

What year is your car?

mine is a 94 but i am going to change the plugs and opti and wires and fuel filter next week and see what that does and as far as the ses light when it comes on the car still runs like it did when it is off so i am not going to worry about it to much i have another moter that i am building so if that one goes i have the other one

I just bought an ALDL cable that can datalogge 93-94 cars. Once I get it figured out ill hook your car up to it if you want.

KUTTER

LMAO Jonny maybe you should pick up a can of deep creep and read it or google its applications.. Instructions state OPEN TB plate spray in where? Intake lol. When I cranked my car and made a smoke screen seriously doubt that build up came from my TB.It has numerous applications though,I choose not to use the "sea foam" as heard mixed opinions thru vacuum.

Ill give you 3 to 1 odds its not a groud lol. Seriously, comes on driving straight line, off at stop? No cutting off, power loss. Ground? Ehhh I say negative.

Good luck finding the issue.. it wont be a major one but it will be a tedious find. Careful who's advise you take to action is all im saying. Approach this issue systematically and you will find it.

i am just going through everthing and doing an elmation of things right now but if it dont go off i am not worried about it... it seems to not be hurting any thing and the car still runs fine with it on.... yeah maby so lt1= fawked for life but i love the motors and they are cheap to build and make good numbers for less money

KUTTER

Gary is ZEEE Lt1 pessimist lol. Your fine, run your codes. Opti IS CAKE. My personal best was like little over 2 hours in dark with a house lamp in my driveway. No special tools aside from 3 jaw puller. Drain coolant, remove hoses, take out fans, drop belt, remove water pump there she lies. 3 lil bolts pop her off, line up pin on new opti (its got a hole in it). Make sure mark plugs if not lined up in clamp thing.

How To Seafoam Your Car instructions. (http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/general-maintenance-repairs/534376-how-seafoam-your-car.html)

This page will become one of your best friends.

Consider buying yourself this cable if you have a laptop instead of a handheld obd1 scanner.

Scott it is possible to be bad ground or open wire of some sort on old harness. O and by not pouring seafoam thru your brake booster you missed out on part three, cleaning out your cylinder banks.
