View Full Version : Jay's Trans Am detail

I've had Jay's car at the house since earlier in the week, and put about 13-14 hours into detailing it the best I could. I did a 2-step polish and acheived probably an 85% correction on it. The deeper scratches and swirls are still there, just less noticeable. Here's the process...

-degreased and washed with Dawn detergent to strip the wax
-all-purpose cleaner (APC) diluted 5:1 for the wheel wells
-APC diluted 10:1 for wheels, inner wheels, and lower parts of the car that had a lot of grime.
-clayed with an agressive Clay Magic bar to remove and fallout, and overspray that was on random parts of the car
-wiped down with IPA (rubbing alcohol mixed 50/50 with water) to make sure every bit of wax or silcone was off the car and the paint was as bare as possible for compounding.
-compounded with M105 using wool......also picked up a new Makita buffer, this thing rocks.
-followed M105 with M205 and finishing pad
-same polishing process for taillights and center section
-IPA wipedowns were done between each step of polishing to make sure the oils from the previous polish were not left behind.
-all exterior plastics and rubber cleaned and protect for F303 Aerospace Protectant
-tires dressed in Blue Satin
-wheel lips polished with Mothers Mag polish, along with the corsa tips
-wax and protected with Mothers #26

This is what it looks like after compounding. Some may not know, but you can only remove scratches, by inflicted smaller, tighter scratches into the surface. Here, the wool/M105 removes largers scratches by putting its own scratch pattern in, and you can see this in the holograms and buffer marks

Here you can see what the detailing people call a sunburst. It's what you are looking for when the sun hits the paint. Instead of the light reflecting from the paint, and the swirls catching all the rays and bouncing them back......the leveled swirl-free finish makes a "sunburst"....where the liht if reflected and sent across the paint in real sharp and crips lines. When you see this, you know you have shined her up well!

So that's it for this detail, and I told myself that I'm not doing any more cars until it warms back up. Not only is it miserable in the cold, but the products act a little differently and are harder to use when the temp is low. If anyone wants something done, hit me up in the Spring....later!

Thanks Tim...not exactly sure when I'm gonna start back up doing this. The only available time I have to do it is after work at night, which is unfortunately miserable since its so cold out. I think 10 outta the 13 hours i spent on this one were in the dark under my carport, in upper 30 degree weather lol, it sucked! I guess around April I will start back up on this stuff....and the price varies from car to car. It just depends on the severity of the paint and how hard the paint is to work with. I think soon I'm going to start charging by the hour, incase I underestimate the price like I did on this one. But, I'll continue to do my friends pretty cheap, and by cheap I mean in the $150-$225 range for something like this. I like helping all of you out. But anyone other than family and friends, I'm seriously thinking about making it $20-$25 an hour....i think my services are worth at least that, not to mention the products I use are pretty pricey!

you did a wicked good job on it, kyle.

Thanks Jeremey, when you get the GTA looking stock-ish like ya want, maybe this can really set it off!

Unfortunately, these swirl marks were probably inflicted by the dealership and the damage was done before the car even left the lot. The "detailers" at dealerships aren't usually very educated on this trade, and any time s anew car recieves the "Dealer Prep" aka detailed before it's sold......80% of the time they really screw the paint up, and just try to hide the swirls with a wax that has a ton of fillers....so it somewhat band-aids the paint until it leaves the lot. A tempoary, and maybe 50% fix for swirls is just using a wax with a ton of fillers in it. IMO probably the best OTC wax for this is Meguais NXT

For light swirl marks, I use Meguairs 205 polish with a blue, white, or black pad. This product finishes down perfect and ready for wax. If the defects and swirls are deep, or they are really tight like Jay's were, I use Meguair's 105 compound starting with an orange pad. If the orange pad doesnt cut fast enough, I'll step up to yellow or wool. The pads are obviously color coded, and are basically universal from brand to brand. An orange Edge pad would have the same cut or bite as an orange Lake Country pad. Usually. If wool doesnt take out all the defects, then I will stop there because a lot of clear has already been taken off, no use in doing anything more agressive.

If anyone has an hour to waste, this guy put together a homemade video talking just on polishing paint. He is one of the most respected guys on Autopia.org.....and really knows his stuff. Kind of amatuer, but the info and demos he gives are great and can really help someone understand polishing paint. Some may think I know alot or act like I know alot about this stuff, but I'm still learning alot, and each car brings me news surprises and knowledge. This guy here REALLY knows his stuff!

Will do....I was noticing the SRT last night, the paint looks real nice on it for real. IDK if you are using a wax with a ton of filler, or you are just actually washing it and taking care of it correctly, but it looks nice.

very nice!

I'll throw ThaHoe on the list if you are still wanting it done, but don't know when it'll be!

I have tried this.....it's the pads that are soaked in polish that you attach to your drill. They will make an improvement.....but not as well as method the I use. The key to restoring headlights....is once you get them looking the way you like them, it's key to keep them protected. And not just clean, its crucial to keep them sealed/waxed JUST like you do your paint. This is because with plastic lenses like that, the "protective" layer in the plastic is on the very top. When you polish headlights, you are actually removing a thing layer of plastic.....just like you remove clear when you polish paint. The layer you remove is most, if not all, of the stuff the protects the plastic from turning nasty and yellow. It's easy though....when you wax your car, just do the headlights too!

thx slick. ain't no hurry anyhows. i honestly don't know when we'd find time to get ya to do it anyhow. THEhoe stays on the road often. no pun intended. lols

i've used about every wax and polish they sell at your local stores and the meguiar's nxt has been the best. easy application, easy removal, and makes the paint look good.

It works pretty good on Honda Headlights. I used it on some girl at school's Honda it made them look new. I used a polishing wheel with Plast-X on my lights and my Sister's Honda and it made them look better than the Advance stuff.

kyle the jeep stays in the garage most of the time, allison drives is about 7 miles to work where she parks its in the shade all day but still not under a tree directly, so not much sap or junk gets on the paint.

i used a mothers cleaner wax, then mothers polish. last time i finished it up with a turtle wax "black wax" for black cars. What do you think? should i change something, i use 100% over the counter parts. i know you get that good stuff, but im too cheap...:)
