View Full Version : My car won't start.

Don't know where to put this, I just need help if you guys know anything about vats or anything like it please.

So I got up this morning and go to class, and my car starts fine and runs fine. Nothing out of the ordinary until I leave school today. I haven't done anything to the car, this is just a random occurrence. I can turn the key part of the way and see the lights on the dash come up like normal, and hear the fuel pump priming like normal, but the security light is flashing as long as the key is halfway turned. The car won't do anything when I turn the key the rest of the way.

Is this a VATS problem? I don't care if I can't use it anymore...I just want my car to work every time I need it. SO will the bypass work for it? I need help as this is my dd and it is stuck in the lot at school and won't move. It has never done this before, and I need the car asap to work again. Maybe the chip just got old, so I tried my spare with still no luck. Any help?

turn the key on and let it sit for a little while like that and then see if it will start.
did you try and clean the key and blow in the key hole ()

No, I have an exam in the morning so I'll be going back to school. I'll try these things. Also gonna check all my fuses when I get there, as my power seat and rear defrost have died recently. Anybody want to buy a camaro?

Na it has a pretty new engine in it haha. Its just a v6, I don't care about the car anymore. I should have just gotten a z28 in the first place, but I'm so over fbodys in general. This sucks because now I have to bum rides all the time. ugh

Friend had the same prob and we bypassed the ignition switch by measuring the resistance on the chip that is on your key . Then getting some resistors from radioshack and bypassing the switch by putting the resistors on the wires under the dash for vats and it is still working to this day. It was his ignition switch not reading the resistance in the key therefore the security light would blink and that is about all it would do besides the fuel pump. Was a 1.00 fix and there is a good write up on tech on what wires to put the resistors on and whatnot.

Do you have a link? I have searched and searched and all I have found is talk of this "writeup" lol. Can't find it. So, where do I get something to test my key? And also, how do i wire in the new resistor once I get the right one?

Need a little more Shon. And yeah you prob have seen it around Seneca or at least a pic or something. If you saw it recently, it had chrome SS wheels.

More than likely your gonna need more than one resistor to get the exact one becouse it has to be almost exact as your key. Do you have a meter that reads ohms? To test it you just put one lead on either side of the chip and it will give you the ohms enless your key is no good which is very unlikely. Ill see if i can find the write up on it.

Thank you! I'm reading it now. I have found a little info from searching. But anyways, once I get my resistor things from Radioshack, how do I splice them into the wire they need to go...I found a pic of which one I need to put it in.

Ok, so is there some where I can rent an ohm reader like Advance rents tools sometimes?

keith_AE2010

Ok nevermind. I found out I can get an ohmmeter for like 5 bucks at any autoparts store. And then just stick my new resistor into the clip and tape it if it works.

So if I use the method of just sticking the resistor in the back of the connector and not cutting lines and soldering...then if I need multiple ones, how do I do it?

Put them in series. You might be able to find the exact one but we couldnt find one and had to add like 4 to make it work. we just stuck his in the connector and taped it up.

Ok so putting them in series just means putting them all together in there?

damn dude that's happened to me before when i had my jeep in high school. went to start her up one day after school and got nothing. then ended up locking my keys in the car too. So after mom brought me a fuse and a coathanger, i got her back on the road. It is a bummer tho, but don't lose hope bro. I can't tell you how many things went wrong on my truck and how many times i said "man i hate this piece of shit" but i really miss that truck now. But the LS1 f-body helps :)

Series is connecting one end to another and so on till they all equal the resistance you trying to get. Once you do that take either end of the series of resistors an put them in that connector. It might take you a few tries if that is whats wrong with your car which sounds like it to me..
