GM said today the are discontinuing the GTO. Just when it was starting to grow on me, was even starting to think it might make a good family car. :nerd: lol

I agree Becky, IF I was a rich man I would have loved to have one as a DD, I have done a few ET on them and a header, sway bar install on a 04 and I thought they were a great(take the family out and beat the phuck outa just about anything in a stop light to stop light run:) ) Its sad that a few of these "Gems" get passed over:shifty:

I bet you they will be bringing back the bird now! Seriously think about it, they need a replacement sports car to replace the GTO for competition. So the new camaro is most likely coming in 08 or 09 so it would make sense for pontiac to use the camaro frame and design to put a firebird body on! I have a feeling next autoshow there will be a bird on display along with the camaro! Well thats my best guess at least. Why wouldn't they do it.

Why wouldn't they do it.
Because its GM, They're great at killing every good car they have...
Casualties:
Buick GN/GNX
GMC Syclone/Typhoon
Chevy Impalla SS (The good rear-wheel drive ones, 94-96)
Chevy Camaro
Pontiac Firebird/TA
Pontiac GTO
All those cars were at the top of their performance game (unlike cars like the Chevelle) And GM just had to Ax them! :flaming mad:

Gees, I hope you are right! Glad of the plans for the Camaro, but we need the Firebird too!

GM sucks donkey balls. They have had some great cars over the years but if they don't pull their head out of their ass, the last purchase I make will be a C6 and then they won't get a dime after that.

They can't bring back the Trans Am/Firebird and call it such. Some legal crap that I can't quite remember the details right now.
Now they could bring out a RWD platform car and call it the Trans Bird or Fire Am and maybe get away with it, but from what I read GM has no plans to replace the GTO with something else as of right now.
I am willing to bet that they will sit back and see how the '08/'09 Camaro sales go and pick up their pencils and head to the drawing board and close up shop on the RWD car idea all together.

Yeah, I don't think GM owns the name Trans Am, not sure about firebird. I know they don't own the name Firehawk either. :drama:

they paid a certain amount on every trans am to the trans am series for naming rights. the same rules that prevented the camaro name from being used prevented the firebird name too. but those should be expired now

This was the plan all along!
Holden said no gauarantees beyond 3 model years.
Now the VZ chassis is done, so no more GTO.
Shouldn't be a surprise.
I really think there will be something to fill the void in a couple years though. :)
GTO? Firebird? Not sure, we'll have to wait and see.

The death of the GTO does leave a void in the Pontiac lineup so you gotta wonder if the 'Bird is coming back.

Im wondering if Pontiac isn't becoming a gap in GMs lineup, along with Buick.

I wasn't aware that they couldn't name it the Trans Am, but the legal requirements regarding making the F-body had to do with the St Therese plant in Canada. Now that that requirement is done - they can make it again.
I always thought the GTO was a little fugly until just this year - then it started to grow on me. Not enough to buy one - just enough not to turn away when I saw one, lol.

Yea they can bring back the T/A the naming rights have expired from the St.T plant so they can bring it back. Just like the camaro name was locked out now they can bring it back too.

The names involved in the whole UAW-Canada & Ste Therese deal were just Camaro & Firebird.
Trans Am is a term copyrighted by SCCA, and GM paid a royalty fee for every car sold bearing that name.
Up to them if they would want to pay that again or not... that is, if SCCA would even allow it.

I passed a 04 GTO(standard hood,BUT a damn nice of wheels) it was blue, dont know what shade was available for the 04 year model, but I gave him a rev at the 4 way intersection, hell the more I look at the them better I like them, they almost seem like the "Lexus" version of a GM hotrod, I would love one of these as a 3rd car, my 02 SS and 05 Silvarado take up all my car budject right now....
