View Full Version : My new third gens

Today I got a new project dropped off at my house. Two third gens, one runs great, the other is just a parts car. I know the one that runs is an 89, 5 speed 2.8 v6. Bright red RS.
Only problems are no keys or titles. My 4th gen key works for the one that runs, and tryin to find out how to get it registered. Any body know where to get papers for it? It may have to be a drag car, but maybe I can get it on the road. Pics soon, they are filthy and have bees. Please comment on ideas what I should do with it. It's new, so no definite plans yet. I do have a set of draglites for the rear though.

I know how you can get a title... but its not exactly legal... :secret:

Haha, I want it all to be legal. I won't drive it a whole lot on the street prob, but it would be nice to not have to have a trailor for a good while. It has american racing wheels on it, but only three. I want to find another to make a set or else just use two and have the draglites on back. I'm glad they will fit, since I just bought them.

haha it would look legal to all parties involved, and even to insurance... but you have to know someone with a junk 89 with a title and vin. You could probably apply for a title through the dmv as long as you have a good vin number.

sure just apply for a lost title at dmv ..

You got another problem. That '89 has VATS and there are 15 different resistors for the keys on those. You'll have to figure out which resistor is the right one.

I'm prob just gonna apply for salvaged title. Something about why the guy sold it to me. I have a title for an 86, it was sold at auction with the wrong title. Maybe the parts car is an 86, I will just have to look.

So that is where I need to go? Just makin sure, I didn't know where to go and I need to go to the dealer and get a key.

What exactly does this mean? My key for my 98 worked just fine at cranking it, I don't wanna have it that way for a long time, but it works fine for me right now.

Sorry for cell phone pics, too busy with July 4th things tonight to really put time into them after they got settled.
This is the parts car. It is parked in a neighbors field for now until I can get some concrete blocks over there and steal the wheels and other things I need. The it is off to the junkyard for scrap metal or parting it out and then off to the junkyard. Unless I get the title for the bright red one for a street car and make this one my drag car. I am keeping the green 98 regardless for reliability.

Juju right.VATS= vehicle anti theft system its the chip looking thing you see in your 4th gen key black piece with metal in middle. They have several diff cuts off keys and vats. If the 89 cranking with 4th gen key. Means whoever had it did a vats bypass, also being basically random key starting it sounds like punched ignition. Try any random key or screwdriver then you know for sure lol. The key with proper vats can get pricey, but i wouldnt sweat it being yours not functional. But if you a perfectionist for whatever reason you cant get key till title in your name as far as i understand. When I lost mine, locksmith called some GM branch to aquire key cut and vats, I had get on phone and awnser gang of questions to confirm I was indeed title holder

Ok, when I locked my door key in my 4th gen, I had to do alot of stuff to get one made. The key the guy I got it from had was just a random key he had been using to start it. So, I want it right. I want two correct ignition keys and two door and hatch keys. Would I go to the dealer after I have the title in my name? My ignition is messed up, where can I get a new one, and a key would come with it, right? Meaning, I would only have to get the door key from the dealer.

well no VATS on door key. Not to sound like bearer of bad news man but no title, bypassed vats, and punched ignition kinda red flags in my book. Or maybe he just didnt want spend money on proper key who knows.. Rregistration would suffice im sure as far as getting key from dealer or locksmith (either can do it). I wouldnt sweat the ignition key if all is functional, door key wont be expensive being no VATS

You thought about doing a push button start? It be cheaper than replacing ignition column/and getting vat keys, and be pimp. Just a suggestion though
OR just get keyless entry/remote start. They all come with 2 fabs at least, and all problems solved

It was sold at an auction and the wrong title was given with it, an old man bought it there and didn't even pay attention. So, we're pretty sure its not stolen. I could do a push button start or remote start, I thought you couldn't do remote start on a manual?

you can get door and hatch cylinders with keys from Autozone I think. Just get have the hatch keyed to match the door.
I bypassed the VATS in my ignition switch because the switch itself stopped reading the key, and I couldn't afford to buy new stuff from the dealer when a resistor in the wiring was $.05 or something.
However, in your case you NEED a new cylinder and keys to make it right.
But you need to run that VIN first, and you probably should have done that before you bought them. I would hate to find out that one or both of them is stolen.

I'm glad you said that, I talked to my dad and found out he did run a carfax. The odometer has been rolled back, but other than that, its good. I saw Hawks has an ignition and key, can I just get that? I'll post the links in a second.

can prolly find cheaper that was on first page when googled.Thats route id go because be less pain in azz imo. But if you ever plan to sell car may as well go the other route.

Yeah you need one with VATS its def more complicated than just bolt in though. Thats why i said Id just remote start that ho lol.. This has all the info on vats keys and replacing ignition lock. It can really be a pain it seems, removing airbag etc etc. Wouldnt let me copy and paste so you gonna have to scroll though

So if I disable vats (or leave it disabled, it obviously already is), then can I just get the ignition with a key and no vats?
KUTTER
07-06-2009, 09:57 PM
Well vats not disabled its bypassed. It wouldnt start otherwise, Im not 100% man im no locksmith maybe awnser in link i posted though. But from what I read its things gotta be in line so to speak. I wouldnt think GM would bothered to spend money on VATS systems if it was just a matter of replacing the ignition though, but again thats just a guess

Ok, maybe I can ask someone at the dealer when I go. I looked at the key the guy I got it from thinking it was a random key, but now that I see the one from hawks, It looks the same. Makes me wonder if it really is an 89, or maybe an early 89. I really need to do some digging with this car, its getting on my nerves how little I actually know for sure.

Thats a very good point never thought it like that.. Thats why i said try other random keys or screwdriver and u know real quick if is punched ignition. Or perhaps guy that had it before you already did the hard work as far as replacing ignition set up.. Check see if its a punched ignition, and run vin see what year it is. That clear up a little of your frustrations

Found what I need for the doors and hatch at Hawks. I am just gonna make a list of what all I want from them and go one day. This is it:

That shouldn't be a super hard install though, right? I am comfortable taking interiors apart and doing it myself.

I believe pro stars or summit stars or some new summit designs would look great. I was really really iffy about the draglites before, esp on a 4th gen, but I got over it and love how they look.

Whatever I get will be polished, I just think it goes the best. I was trying to go with a more drag style than handling, but am still open to changes.
What about these?

Or should I go with a more tt2 or that kind of knockoff type? I don't wanna pay for prostars, so maybe summit stars.

just my personal opinion, so take it how you wish, but I would use that money and throw a motor in there to justify having drag wheels on there to begin with. I've always been a fan of make it go fast before you make it look fast (hence why I've spent my money on bolt ons and still have the 4x4 look LOL).

Will I have to take apart my whole steering column to install the new key? Is it hard?
It is sitting on three bald tires(two of one wheel, and the other just a randow S10 wheel), the other is the spare from my 98. So, it needs wheels and tires. My draglites aren't working with it right now, So I need something different. It's ok, I have oppinions too and most likely won't get upset when someone suggests there's.

You should be able to track down the wiring diagrams for that year online (try thirdgen.org) and see if you can find the wiring for that ignition cylinder.
Depending on which side of the connector for the cylinder that they used to bypass VATS on, you might get away with unplugging the old one, fishing the wiring up the column, and replacing the cylinder, and replacing it with the new one.
Best thing to do is look at a wiring diagram though.

If its anything like it is on a 4th Gen, then i should be pretty straight forward. I had to it on my T/A and it only took a few hours. Just make sure you put the steering wheel back on straight lol...
