View Full Version : Another server move...

We're going to be moving to a new server, probably this weekend. And we will be having some upgrades too.

I'm tired of database errors from the server, so I am going to move the site to a new server.

There are some upgrades to packages on the site, so I'm going to try and get it all upgraded too.

So, be prepared for the site to go down this weekend.

When will the site be functional again?

I have to download the files from here as they are, and upload them to the new server.

Turn the site off, and back up the database. Upload the database to the new server.

Once that is done, I have to set DNS for the domain names to point to the new server. That change will take up to 36 hours to complete.

I can turn the site off first, and place the DNS order 2nd, and do all the other stuff by IP since half has to be done that way anyway.

Pick a nice sunny day outside for the switch. None of us are on when the weather is great outside anyway.

Good luck and hope it goes smoothly. I know all too well how that goes. I recently moved all of our facility's stuff over to an outside source that guarantees 99.9% uptime as the lines at our place suck. I also have us using VOIP, so when it would go down, everything was down except for a few crucial things.

I still back-up onsite, but you can't fight with Bell or whatever they call themselves these days.

We're most of the way back up now. Sorry for the down time guys.

There are a few things left to tidy up, and I still have to do the upgrades, but the move is almost 100% complete.

We're at least moved enough to function, and just a few straggler files I think. I know the banners aren't there at the moment, but it's after midnight and I have to get to bed.

I'm leaving it uploading and importing database data now. Hopefully we'll be 100% in the AM.

No one hardly post on here on the weekends either. I guess nobody feels like sitting in front of a monitor on their day off.

I noticed that as well this morning, but it seems to have gotten slightly better. a little slower than before but not too bad.

I'm looking into the performance right now. Server load is normal, so that shouldn't be an issue. It might have been a slight issue to do with uploading some of the scripts.

The only thing I'm seeing being slow is the gallery images at the top of the home page. Everything else seems fine to me.

Is anyone else having problems?

Sorry for the downtime a few minutes ago. I had the hosting company look at the box. They found a problem, fixed it and had to restart the server.

Hopefully that will help some. It does seem better to me.

The tech said that the site was very well behaved on his machine, after the restart.

Believe it or not, the server banned both of my work IPs, so I couldn't access any of the site's domain names during that reboot/fix period earlier today. LOL

I submitted the ticket, and less than 5 minutes later the site went down for me, so I was like WTF?, so I waited a bit and called them and said hey the box is broken, and he got to looking and found that issue, fixed it, restarted the box and got to looking and found out that my IPs were banned. Said that I must have flooded the server or something, so it banned me.
