i figured id start a new thread since we have a nice little list of things for the nova and not much time to get it all done! after we got the car on the interestate today, it only took 3 minutes to decide we are gonna get one of the tubular bolt on front ends that comes with coilovers, rotors, calipers, all that junk. anyone know which one is best bang for the bug? we found a company in charlotte that makes them, but its like $2k and thats the chepest we can find! anyway....heres the list and ill keep everything updated here...
Exterior
-17 x 7 Coys C5 gunmetal (ordered)
-touch up all scratches and chips
-cut and buff
-polish all aluminum
-silver and burgundy pinstripe down the side
-conv top boot
-repaint some emblems
Interior
-full stereo
-white shift knob
-gas pedal
Engine/Engine Bay
-pull motor, replace all gaskets and seals
-paint block black
-beadblast or paint intake manifold and water pump
-convert to electronic ignition, new wires, looms, etc
-aluminum or chromed pulleys
-shorty headers
-Black Crinkle dress up kit https://www.factoryperformanceparts.com/product-exec/product_id/112/nm/Black_Crinkle_Deluxe_Dress_up_Kit_for_Chevy_small_ block_engines/category_id/1
Suspension/Brakes
-lower car 2 inches in the front, and however much in the rear to level it
-convert rear to disc brakes
-mini subframe kit (tubular lower a-arms and bracing)
-paint all calipers and brackets
-new stainless lines, master cylinder, etc.
if anyone has any leads to this stuff or know where we can find some of it cheap, lemme know! esp the stuff for the front end swap. we would rather just find somethin already assembled that bolts right in, but he may be open to other stuff!

Got some stuff done today. ripped the intake manifold and carb off go go get beadblasted and cleaned up real good, and also ordered a fix for the front end. instead of forking out $3k for an new front end, dad just ordered a mini subframe kit that has tubular lower control arms, bracing that bolts to the frame, and ball joints. apparently this fixes most of the steering issues these cars have and was WAY cheaper than going with all new front end stuff. pretty neat little kit they came up with http://www.classicperform.com/NewProducts/2006/NewFiles/NovaSubFrame.htm
up next is hide all the wiring i can, put the wheels on, and lower it within the next week or so with 2 inch drop spindles in the front and blocks in the back.

Kyle you shouldn't have to paint that intake if you blast it with small beads ...

the wheels, mini subframe kit, and anti-sway bar came in the mail today. we repainted the motor the best we could (with it still in the car) and also had the intake manifold powdercoated grey. water pump also got repainted as well as some brackets, and hid a few wires and removed the wiper fluid crap from the engine bay.
sunday we're gonna head up to the AutoFair and try to find a convertible top boot, shifter boot, electronic ignition (still has the points stuff), black crinkle valve covers and breather.
by next weekend the car should have everything on it that we can find at the show, all the suspension parts we ordered, wheels/tires, and also be lowered and running again! cant wait to see the new look and stance with the wheels and it being lowered.
anyone have any 215/45/17 tires? maybe even 205/45/17.

tires are mounted on the wheels, breather and valve covers are in, lecarra billet sterring wheel installed, new pleather shift boot and ring installed. we removed the stock radio and are gonna cut the stock dash to house an aftermarket unit, and order some kick panels that house speakers.
this afternoon dad is going down to Southern Rods and Parts and picking up some long tubes, chrome fan shroud, HEI distributor, coil, wires, etc. hopfully by this weekend we will have some time to throw all this stuff on, things are alot busier than we expected and theres not much time to mess with it.

we didnt think LTs would fit in there easily, but after seeing some cars in person, the will. hes getting them for like $115 so ya cant beat that. made by Flowtech. they arent coated, but nothing a little eastwood paint cant fix for cheap.
negative on the byrnes car show. its not making it to any shows until after baseball season, i have games every saturday. MAYBE a saturday night cruise in, but no shows till summer time.
Maybe you can get some updated pics when you have time. Sounds like you guys are making very nice progress with it.

not too much done under the hood, just cleaning stuff up a bit and relocated some of the wiring. reapinted the master cylinder, touched up some spots on the inner fenders, removed all the washer fluid stuff (hoses and reservior), repainted brakets, had the intake powdercoated, repainted the block the best we could, repainted the water pump as well. all thats rest is to convert it to electronic ignition, find a crome rad shroud, and put the new valve covers, breather, and headers on it.

Kyle, go ahead and buy a CD player. It will come with a stamped steel housing that shrouds the CD player itself. take that shroud and center it up on the dash where you want it. The shroud should have a lip on it, use the backside without a lip and a sharpie to mark around it where you want the CD player to sit. Cut out inside the sharpie mark until the shroud fits in.
There will be some tabs on the shroud you can bend outwards. Bend as many out as you can that are going to come in contact with the dash so that the lip and the tabs are going to secure the CD player in the dash.
Pull the wires through the shroud that is secured in the dash and wire up the harness for the CD player. Plug the harness into the CD player and slide the CD player into the shroud. It should click into place. Then, snap on the bezel that covers the lip of the shroud and snaps in place around the CD player.
Just be careful and don't cut too much out of the dash. You only got one shot at it.

who cares, its not a numbers matching SS car. dads decision not mine. he wants to have a CD player in view and easily accessible and nothing in the trunk. glove box is a no-go, thats too far to reach to change CDs while driving. the CD players look good mounted in the stock dash anyways, its not like it looks bad.
got some mroe stuff done tonight. all we need is plug wires and shes ready to drive again. the headers are gonna wait for a while. we put one of the new wheels on just to see how it looks...

I agree with you kyle, the TT rims are nice but some thing bout them dont match with the car. Im sure you and your dad will get the right wheels to compliment the Nova. got some work done tonight. tthe car i running again now, just needs an alignment and we have to do something with the front tires and fender, they rub a little. but we installed the minisubframe kit. it just replaces the lower control arms with tubular units, and comes with a big thick brace for the center. also put on a sway bar so the car should handle 10x better now. i got to looking, and the rear has air shocks, so we took enough out to lower the rear almost 2 inches. i still think it needs to be lower, but this is where its at now! we also had to drive the car in the rain tonight to she shop, and no leaks anywhere with the convertible top so thats a huge plus...

got the stereo 90% done tonight. everything is wired up, the door panels are cut (didnt have the cut the doors tim its ok, hole was already there) to hold the tweeters and 6 inch mids, crossovers are mounted under the dash. all thats left is to drill a hole in the door to run the wires through the door jam, hang the speakers, and we're done.
this cd player is the best $130 he's spent on the car. plays dvd, cd, tv, is ready for a backup camera, bluetooth ready, mp3, ipod...all touch screen. the speakers we used are kicker components, picked them up for $60 from a friend with a stereo shop and i have to say they are the cleanest speakers ive ver heard. after we finish this, all thats left is to wire the gauges up and she'll be ready for the cruise-ins! on to the pics....

Nice looking project.:thumbs up: I'm helping my uncle restore his 65 Nova SS. I just got done completely rewiring the whole car and we put an autometer gauge set in it from Covan's. I like the gauges but their customer service SUCKS!!! I see that your four speed shifter is really close to the seat too. My uncles hurst shifter is that way too. I think I'm going to get him to buy the stock shift handle for a muncie shifter and the adapter to adapt it to the hurst shifter.

LOVE that shade of blue man, nice paint and body. the sifter wouldnt be a problem if the seats were so dang wide. in the future i think an interior swap from an acura TL would be nice. i saw someone did that on a nova forum and the seats go perfect with the car, especially the rear becaise its the perfect width. its too bad they dont make a 4 spd center consol for these either, you have to make your own.
i was hoping to drive the car out to our meet tongiht in greenville but the car wont have insurance on it until the morning. bummer.

Thanks, it is LeMans Blue.
Yes, they make the consoles. We bought one for his 65 a while back. Its techincally a 66-67 console but the only difference in a 65 and 66-67 is the color of the metal on top of the console. 62-64 didn't have a 4 speed console, but this will work in it. I believe the only consoles that came in them were for powerglides.

for a brief time, they reproduced the entire console, and that was about 2-3 years ago. we found one at super chevy for 375 bucks and bought it on the spot. To this day I have not seen another repop 4 speed console. All of the ones on ebay are usually originals and bring BIG money.

i believe that console will only work with 66-67 seats, which must be more narrow than ours or something. our bucket seats in the 62 come together and touch in the middle, so we would have to have somethin made to fit it.

A 65 and newer uses a 0-90 ohm sending unit. I think that all 62-67 tanks are the same. It would be a direct replacement and would keep you from having to modify the tank.

yes its a lecarra steering wheel, he picked it up at the charlotte autofair. the stock 62 unit is 0-30 ohm. the aftermarket one is 0-90 so we are going to have to put a new sending unit in. itll only take a couple hours, no big deal. its already hooked up the way it should be and doesnt work, so they cant be the same. searched around a most everyone online is saying the 62 unit is unfortunately 0-30.

he is sayin that a 65-67 has the same gas tank but uses a 0-90 ohm unit so all you have to do is go to the local parts house and buy one for a 65 and its a direct replacement

if we're gonna do all that, we might as well just use the sending unit that came with the gauge and keep our gas tank

i dont think your getting what he is sayin no one ever said switch tank he was just saying get the part you need but order it for a 65 and it will fit in your tank as a direct replacement with no mods and its a 0-90 ohm

oh i thought yall meant switch to a tank that already had a unit that would work with it. well regardless, we have the sending unit that came with the gauge, so we'll just put it in. just making sure the stock would or wouldnt work, which we see it wont now.

62-65 sending units are the same. 66-67 looks to be the different one, so thats what he ordered, hope yall were right about this!!!

or do some background research before purchasing, rather than blindly taking someones' advise. not that he's not correct, im sure he is... but if its wrong, its not his fault no one checked the validity of it.

i thought a 65 unit was 90 ohm and 62-64 were 30, but I stand corrected. Maybe this is why my uncle's fuel gauge doesn't work correctly in his 65. Autometer told me that 65 and up GM was 90 ohm.....i guess they were wrong.
