It is good to learn from your mistakes.......but it best to learn from mistakes made by others..... cheaper also lol.
This thread is about mistakes and lessons learned in dealing with forced induction setups so that the new or less experienced person wont be violently parted with their cash by making the same ones. Of course if you find new ways to relieve your wallet of some hard earned cash feel free to post them here......nothing better than some good carnage pictures along with the how and why.

Since I have had a blower on the car over 20yrs at this point you can imagine I have had a few dumb ass moments lol. I learned real quick after I put the supercharger on that a forced inducted car revs a lot faster than a N/A car with that said I would recommend if you don't have a rev limiter to get one before the first time you drive it. I missed second gear (ordered the rev limiter the next day) and did this to five pistons..... luckily it didn't do any valve damage and I saw this at a later date.

Any engine that has boost applied to it is very very very unforgiving of any type of mistake. The three biggest areas to watch are timing, fuel mixture and octane. This next picture is from when I was running 15lbs boost and had no problems all summer running a 50/50 mixture of 93octane and 110 octane. The first cold night in the fall (50*) I stepped into it and immediately heard a knock (I can tell you at this point if you can hear it it's already to late) lifted off the gas and looked in the mirror to see a mosquito killing fog coming out of the exhaust. Along with the pistons that were damaged the entire end was blown off of several spark plugs.
The reason behind this is colder air is more dense therefor the colder the air.... the more you get in the cylinder..... the higher the compression..... the richer you mixture needs to be and the higher your octane level has to be also. This is a much bigger difference on a blown engine than on a N/A engine
I will admit I made this mistake more than once
Also I will add this was with chrome molly rings IMO they are more susceptible to detonation so I don't use them any more

Let me try to point out the obvious ones that might get over looked...
dont lay tools on your battery... ive actually seen someone lay a wrech on the battery with the top mounts and the pos/neg both touched the wrech and ended up making a mess to say the least.
if your lifting the front end, put your parking/e-brake on AND but SOMETHING behind the rear wheels, i dont care how level your garage is, always do that.
have a large towel or a mechanic's cover to put over the body panel so the paint doesnt scratch while leaning in the engine bay... it sounds dumb, but i clip my keys to my belt buckle and scratch the paint a few times.
truck guys... dont forget to put those metal pins back in to hold your headlights on... ya i've done it, lol and all of a sudden my lights were hanging slapping my grille, lol.
and ill think of some others as they come to me (or happen to me, lol)

Ok one more and I am done for now (only want to look so bad lol).
The supercharger that I have on the car right now has a positive drive belt system (cogged) on it which has a solid mount idler pulley vs a spring loaded one for the serpentine systems. The recommended belt tension is 1 1/2" to 2"play in the middle......for some reason a couple of years ago I had been working on the car and tightened the idler way up (makes the "whine" louder but has bad results) within 20mi afterward the front of the crank snapped off which was bad enough but I also have gear drive and the idler dropped into the pan when the crank broke stopping the cam and since my car is a manual the crank was still turning and bent almost every stainless valve in the head
Superchargers get very very hot and since they are made of aluminum they expand a great deal from cold to hot and as you can see that expansion has enough force to snap the crank so keep your belt at least as loose as recommended

Always check the simple problems first instead of jumping to huge conclusions, You could spend hours looking for a problem and all it was is a blown fuse! I've made tons of those errors.

haha word. i tore apart the enterior of an 86 nissan truck because it was a former landscaping truck and i was trying to get the stench out, ripped everything out shampood it and put it back in, then i cleaned the eninge. mother fucker wouldnt start.
at first i thought i messed up the injectors, or sometihng with teh engine, so basicly i removed and tested everything on the engine. turned over but jsut wouldnt start.
turns out when i put the drivers seat back in i forgot to ground the computer (its underneath it)
i felt like such a jackass, i wasted a whole week on that pos

A friend of mine saw two guys holding hands walking on the sidewalk in San Fran while he was stationed there in the Navy. So he rolled down his window and yelled something at them. After that he realized what a mistake he made, these guys were huge and started yelling back at him saying "Come on Breeder will **** you up" etc...
