View Full Version : Spun Rod Bearing!

The EnforceR

yep....the oil pump wasnt the problem, its a spun rod bearing. ill be taking the engine out from the top more than likely within the next week or so. anyone know how much a rebuild kit is for this? i think jay should know this better than anyone.

Hey i have any engine hoist if you need to borrow one. Let me know if you need a hand.

NEMESISVETTE
07-10-2008, 06:05 PM
I wouldnt say im right just yet. Is it a knock or tap that is consistent with the RPM or does it come in at different levels of the RPM band? This type of failure hits close to home with me> it was the demise of LS6 last year. Like Mike I would hope its trash in the oil galley or pickup tube thats leaving parts dry; thus causing the tick\knock

haha nice copy/paste gary! haha but yea i think it is. the motor is comin out either way. my dad heard it and thought the same, kales dad checked it out and said spun rod bearing too.

No sense in pulling the motor and not doing some engine upgrades too :)

I know I have a set of 241 heads that you can purchase cheap with Beehive Valve Springs already installed! Just port them yourself and you can have some really cheap horsepower. You might just have to put that hood on hold for a while.

The EnforceR
07-10-2008, 08:56 PM
i cant be upgrading stuff like all you cats who work full time jobs. once mid august gets here, i wont be making hardly any money until next may again. cant afford to do any big overhauls really. the only thing i MAY do, and is a BIG if....is upgrade the cam to somethin big like an MS4 and put duals valve springs in it. thatd only set me back about $200....since i could sale the cam/springs i have now for maybe $350 and get a big cam and duals for aroud $500. the bay will def get the attention it needs and get resprayed to get all the spots i missed tho.

Why dont you just pull the k-member out and do the rod bearings. Would save a lot of time and effort for now until you really want to put some money in her. That would be what i would do for now since you dont have a ton of money to play with. But also sorry to hear about that.

MrDavid
07-11-2008, 06:37 AM
You don't have to get an MS4. you can buy the 241 heads from me for $200, then just port them yourself and probably make even more power than you would with the huge cam. Your retune shouldn't be very difficult at all and you will still have all the good street manners of your current cam.

thats a good idea until you do all the work and its a cam bearing. im speaking from experience haha. even though its probably not a cam bearing, you can never tell what it is exactly by the sound.

Yeah, we thought mine was a spun rod bearing but it ended up being a snaped crank, but hopefully its something easy and you can get that thing back togather fast.

Very true, that would suck if it were a cam bearing and not a rod bearing. But hopefully it is only a rod bearing and that would be an easy fix.

07-11-2008, 04:15 PM
dave if i do anything, ill just get a bigger cam. i dont wanna do all that work of porting them myself really. and i could care less how much power it makes now, anyways. im leanin more towards show stuff now, and if itll hit a mean ass lick, thats god enough for me. yea, power is good, but im gettin outta that ballgame bc it breaks shit too easily.

MrDavid
07-11-2008, 04:39 PM
You aren't getting out of that ballgame. You are just talking. You want a show and go car. Just get a MS3 and a LS6 intake and you'll be good.

The EnforceR

yea if a changed it, itd at least be MS3 size, and i may be doin some trading with butch to get his LS6 intake...

you can drop the 4th gen engine and trans out the bottom in 2 hours with 2 people.

Sorry to hear about the trouble Kyle. Best of luck getting it back together quickly.

The EnforceR
07-12-2008, 08:32 AM
im gonna hafta take it outta the top more than likely....i wanna be able to keep the car on 4 wheels so i can roll it onto a trailor. if i WERE to take it out the bottom....how long would it take to take the motor off the k-member once its out, and put the k-member back under the car? i cant leave it sittin on jackstands in my dad's shop, takes up space that he could be using.

LWillmann
07-12-2008, 09:28 AM
It wouldn't take long at all, just a matter of pulling the motor mount through bolts. To get it off the K-member, you'll have to lean the strut assemblies out (like a wishbone), and lift the engine off.

To get the K-member back in the car, you'll just have to direct the struts back up into the towers, and bolting it back up.

The EnforceR
07-12-2008, 06:06 PM
after talkin with chris g, im just gonna take the car to the shop one night, lift it off the k-memeber....roll that out and pull the motor off, and drop the car back on the k-member and bolt the steering back up. that way i can get it back on a trailor and at the house so i can do some more engine bay work if i can.

ill re-paint the engine bay (3rd time in a year LMAO!) the night before i put the motor in so itll be dried good enough to put the motor back in. anyone have a cherry picker and engine stand i could borrow (within reasonable distance)?

Camaroslpss
07-12-2008, 06:50 PM
I have a cherry picker. Just let me now when you need it, I wont need it till next Saturday or sunday. Hopefully thats when ill be putting my motor back in.

LWillmann
07-13-2008, 10:47 AM
You'll have two electrical connectors in the passenger compartment, I think it is one white and one blue. It's the PCM harness that goes through the firewall. You can disconnect those two and pull the wires out of the grommet.

You'll have to disconnect the brake lines for the front wheels, the front ABS connectors where they connect between the body and K-member, and the steering shaft too. And the A/C compressor, but I think you can leave the A/C compressor in the car.

If you use something like a piano cart (furniture dolly) under the K-member, it will support the weight and keep the shocks from leaning in on you. You can probably get one at harbor freight if you have one locally and don't have a cart already.

Camaroslpss
07-13-2008, 11:37 AM
Yea it is. This was my first motor pull and i pulled it out the top. It took me a little while when i pulled it out. Now that i know what im doing, it shouldnt take me that long. Let me know if you need the cherry picker and help. I live like to mins from the mall.

The EnforceR
07-13-2008, 12:30 PM
its much easier than people make it out to be, yea.....but the bottom still is easier as long as you have access to a lift (comming from people who have done both and done them alot). i dont wanna risk scratching anything up real bad when i put it back together, and just like the idea of lifting the car off the subframe better than lifting the motor out.

if i can round up a trailor, im gonna drop the motor out this afternoon at the shop and trailor the car back home.

The EnforceR
07-13-2008, 10:04 PM
yea i found a trailor late tongiht. i went ahead and got everything ready to lift the car off the subframe. all i gotta do is unbolt 2 bolts on the steerin column, 4 bolts on the strut tower, and 6 bolts on the kmember.

bout to head to the shop and drop the motah out. while its out, im gonna try to make my own coil pack relocation kit. if it works out well, i might can put together a lil package for whoever wants it done. while everything is apart, im gonna repaint my valve covers and get them near perfect since the whole thing will be visible now.....what color would yall recommend for the valve covers and STB? i'll have a silver intake manifold, too....so silver is otuta the question for the valve covers.

the options are
-same red, just re-do it
-black
-some type of electric metallic blue, like the 350z color.
-burgundy/garnet color with metallic

im also going to relocate the A/C drier and get it off the fender and out of site if i can, all thats required is extending one of the hoses (the top one between the heater box and the polished drier), anyone know where i could get that done?

Nauty99SS
07-14-2008, 05:03 PM
cline hose and driveline , they can make any kind of hose any length ..

MrDavid
07-14-2008, 05:03 PM
I'd stay with black. You don't want to get too carried away with several colors and end up with a rainbow engine bay.

And, I think the A/C hoses are VERY expensive. At least thats what i've heard. Never priced one for myself.

as long as its just 3 colors, it wont look rainbow at all, unless all three are bright. you need one main color (silver), and secondary color (black), and an accent color (idk yet) IMO. anything past 3 colors IMO gets a little too much, but some can pull it off.

i tore the motor apart about an hour ago.....rod #3 had a spun bearing. it was paper thin, so the crank was chewed up and its gonna hafta be spun down about .020 probably. other than that, everything looks fine.

it looks like what caused this was the oil return tube was CAKED in sludge buildup. i ran seafoam through it last year but i dont guess that was good enough. sucked the pan dry, but im glad i caught it bc much longer the bearing could have beeen gone.

so, gonnna drop the crank off tomorrow to get it turned. order my bearings after is ee how much they take off, and also order my ARP rod bolts. while im waiting on the crank, ill relocate my coil packs, repaint everything, and hide some more stuff....should be about 2 weeks before shes on the street again!

the harmonic balancer tapered the end of my crankshaft. I have pics of it in the 383 build thread i started. Then it just went downhill from there. But it did have 133000, so it was probably overdue.

The car is loud and flashy, so I figured that black would be too suttle for you, but I do think it would look good.

BTW, the seafoam could have been the culprit in causing the spun rod bearing. Seafoaming the crankcase thins the sludge in a motor enough to bring it all to the oil pan, but not thin enough to pass through the oil pump pickup screen or to drain out of the oil pan. The only time you should flush a motor is when you plan to shortly after pull the oil pan to remove the sludge.

The EnforceR
07-16-2008, 03:46 PM

I have never heard that before. My friend James had to pay out of pocket to fix his a little over a year ago. If you just have comprehensive insurance, that will fix it.

07-17-2008, 09:57 PM
****

MrDavid
07-18-2008, 04:10 AM
So liability does not fix a broken windshield with no out of pocket expense. Comp will fix it regardless of what the cause of the broken windshield is. Mine cracked last year because of the way we jacked the car way up in the air to change the clutch. It was replaced for free with no questions asked.

hi officer
07-18-2008, 07:07 AM
well yall can look into it further but i was told awhile back that by law your insurance company has to replace it if its a road hazard. i know comprehensive will cover it "no matter what" said with orbit girl accent

LWillmann
07-18-2008, 12:25 PM
State Farm told me that if something flies into your car, Comprehensive covers it, but if you hit something, it's considered Collision and would also be covered, but would fall under the deductable of whichever it fell under.

For me:
Comp = $0 deductable.
Collision = $250 deductable.

She also said that the Collision claim could cause my rates to go up, just because of the claim itself.

I did not realize that the comprehensive would cover you jacking the car up to work on it. If that's true and Kyle has comprehensive, then he's good, depending on his carrier.

At least, we can hope he has a good insurance company.

Sorry I had to edit that post, but I sent the writer a PM about it.

Also, Liability insurance is just that, Liability. It covers your liability in an accident, it pays for the other person's car/property, and medical bills I believe. Does not cover your vehicle/property.

The EnforceR
07-18-2008, 01:10 PM

MrDavid
07-18-2008, 02:55 PM
Kyle, i'm about 99% sure that you will have to pay out of pocket for a cracked windshield if you only carry liability. If all insurance companies covered new windshields for people with just liability, then we would NEVER see a car with a cracked windshield on the street.

01BlackBird
07-18-2008, 03:24 PM
