I have an 01 Honda CBR F4i and lately the trans shifting has gotten worse and worse. Mainly the 1-2 shift. If I get on it hard through first and let out at say 55mph and try and shift on up to 5th when I shift into 2nd it is nasty crunch noise the other gears it goes ahead and pops on into gear easily. This is my first bike and I know nothing really about them. I assume that the kind of crunch Im getting is from some f-ed synchros from lots of hard riding. Am I correct? Its just not a smooth shift anymore it kind of feels like in a manual car when you dont have the clutch pushed all the way in and try and shift it how it grinds and shakes thats basically what this does. I have adjusted the clutch cable to pull it in as far as it will go but no dice still the same. Time to rebuild the trans? How hard is it? I have built a motor but no trans work. Anybody have a clue how much Im looking at spending?
Thanks, Cody

Sounds bad you should give the bike to me.
Sounds like you are on the right track but you are going to have to tear into it before you know what is wrong exactly. I have been doing a ton of reading here lately and it seems second gear is a common problem on a lot of bikes.

Might try something as simple as using a thinner oil. I remember one time I used a thick racing oil in my R1 and it shifted like shit, almost like the tranny was going out. Went back to a thinner 5w50 and all the problems went away. Start there....

you shouldnt be afraid to pull that trans all to pieces after building that motor of yours... I can build an HD tranny with my eyes closed these days... I have just had it apart so many times its not even funny. from what it sounds like, you have worn the clutch friction material down quite a bit and are in need of a new one. if you have already adjusted the cable all the way out and tried it then I would say thats what it is. While you have it apart inspect the syncros very well.. I have heard of more than one honda tranny having those issues after being ridden hard for a while but they sell hardened syncros too so it wouldnt be a big deal to upgrade... you can try the iol out first just to eliminate the obvious shit first but I kind of ave a feeling its clutch or syncro related... hope I can help you out with this since you offered to help me so much with the truck... this is kinda my dept....
