View Full Version : Whats next for your car?
MrDavid
08-20-2007, 09:34 PM
Since we all end up yapping about what we plan to do with our cars in various threads that were intended for something else, I figured I would devote one just for "plans for your car."
With that being said, post up whatever your next plans for your ride are. Cosmetics? Power Adder? Solid Bottom End? Whatever you have in mind.
Me personally, I am changing the exhaust this week hopefully and then i'll be saving for some forged pistons and rods hopefully in late Fall or possibly Winter.

and change the oil :secret:
MrDavid
08-21-2007, 11:24 AM
Thomas, I think you just need to dump the next chunk of money into full suspension. That, plus a little more nitrous should net you a 7.0 with a good 60' and hitting every shift on point.
89RABIDFOX
08-21-2007, 02:32 PM
Well I Think With A Little More Nitrous Will Get Me A 7.0 Or 7.1 At Least. I Do Need A Little Suspension Help Though For Sure. If I Was To Change Some Suspension Stuff And Get A Good 60 Foot I Think Id See A 6 Something. I Know It Has It In It I Just Got To Get It Out Of It First.

you're always confused. Burlap posted above what he plans to do with his car. Chris wanted to know what kind of car he has. I told Chris he has a Cobalt SS. Chris said "oh, cool" then he posted a link of a twin turbo CAMARO SS and told me to check it out. That is the car that Kyle and Jay are posting about above. U straight now?

lol at Kyle.
Well, the true duals are fabbed up and in place. The car sounds similar to Jays now but louder with a little lope to it. Its quite a bit deeper than the SLP but I like it a lot better. I'm probably going to have to wrap the fuel lines and the nitrous line in some heat resistant material due to the mufflers running pretty close. Also going to have to put the stock springs back on or either put spacers in the current ones.

actually i didnt pay more cuz i got mine with the car and if mine were single chambers they would flow the same, but i dont know if i would want any louder
the cam is probably the only thing making it louder. If me and you swapped mufflers then mine would still probably be louder just for the fact of the cam. Mine sounds almost exactly like yours until I drop the hammer, then it gets super loud, but still a deep tone, unlike the SLP which was raspy as heck.
MrDavid
08-23-2007, 09:16 PM
what kind of gears do i need to get like motive or richmond and does it need to be 2 series or what
I would go with factory GM gears which you can also pick up from the website I told you about earlier. www.neweraperformanceparts.com

yep i love true duals just gotta find a good shop that i trust i had some work done at steves muffler on my Mountaineer when i had them custom make some true dual side exit Lightning style exhaust. pretty good work.
the 97 Mountaineer was my first car and it is now my little bro's who is still in Greenville some of you may see it around town still its kinda hard to miss a big blue mountaineer with 4 kcs on top and a side exit exhaust. im sure im the only one crazy enough to turn a mountaineer into what looks like a giant "rollerskate"
MrDavid
08-24-2007, 10:04 AM
I just had true duals put on yesterday and I am already in love with the deep sound. There is a couple of shops around here where you can have them fabbed up. The guy that tuned my car said he can also make them at the place where he works. He said he can do it fairly cheap too.

08-24-2007, 05:28 PM
Mine is Cherry Bomb single chambers, 3", dumped before the axle. It sounds pretty good, to me anyway. I'll get a sound clip up on here tomorrow probably. I'm not too familiar with the Greenville area on muffler shops but, in Spartanburg, Express Lube and Muffler can fab you up some for around $250.

That stuff is not easy to apply. I know a guy that does that type of work if you want it done. They did a blue Acura NSX the other day and it had paint almost like the mystic color except more blue and it changed the properties of he paint bigtime. Where the shield was it didnt match the rest of the car. Its not something you can just take off easy either. It takes a lot of heat and steady pulling to get it off and it cannot be reapplied after removal. Just some things to think about before spending 500 dollars to get it done and you not like it.

What in the world is going on with everybody's stuff going bad....but don't worry I'll still stand behind it. Just let me know when you want to drop it by Jay and I'll do something about it. David, you do the same, just let me know and I'll see what I can do. There really isn't a warranty on the vinyl, but the most you'll have to pay for is the vinyl itself if you have to pay anything at all, and its definitely not expensive. Lets just hope that the hood doesn't start going bad because that thing was not easy to do. Is John's going bad too???
MrDavid
08-26-2007, 08:35 PM
Not that I know of. My car is a little older than his and I think it is due to the glue and not just the Vinyl. Its ok if I have to pay a little, I don't mind. I just want it fixed.
The EnforceR
08-26-2007, 10:19 PM
dave i promise you its the glue underneath, theres spots on the rest of the panel too, and the bubbles are right in line where they apply the glue from the factory. if he fixes it, its only gonna be good for a few months bc that glues gonna keep commin up.
WhiteIrocZ
08-26-2007, 10:34 PM
Yeah, the small bubbles in it are the glue messing up, or whatever causes that on 4th gen cars, but there is a small swirly looking spot on them that is just the vinyl doing funny stuff. It will definitely look better to replace those 2 pieces on the roof, but it still won't be flawless.
MrDavid
08-27-2007, 10:45 AM
I can see the glue spots in the glare of sunlight, but on top of the vinyl they have already broken through and look like some little popped bubbles. I have to get that replaced because it looks awful.

In house man....a vinyl shop just opened up next door, and they are guys that done work for us and we have known for years. If you could give me an exact measurement of how wide those stripes are it would help me out. Give me an approximate measurement of how long they are too if you could.

In house man....a vinyl shop just opened up next door, and they are guys that done work for us and we have known for years. If you could give me an exact measurement of how wide those stripes are it would help me out. Give me an approximate measurement of how long they are too if you could.
Will do as soon as I get the car back. Hopefully tomorrow but it looks like I won't be doing any racing for at least a week. Back to the exhaust shop.

08-27-2007, 10:50 PM
what do you have to break exhaust in now days or something
MrDavid
08-27-2007, 11:01 PM
It has a massive exhaust leak where the collector runs into the mid pipe. Kyle's dad is going to have to do some repair work. It is letting fresh air in and when it hits the 02 sensors it thinks the engine is running rich so it removes fuel and thus, it is running extremely lean now.

How Many More Exscuses Are You Gonna Come Up With So You Dont Do Any Racing? Lol. What Is Next. My Lugnuts Feel Like They Get Loose From Time To Time So I Dont Want To Race Just To Make Sure They Are Ok. Lol.

excuses? You are the one with a broke ass car every weekend. Its spuddering... that seems to be your latest one.

MrDavid
08-28-2007, 05:23 PM
thats the difference between me and him then. I am not going to race mine if it isn't running right. I have a little too much invested in it to do something stupid like racing when it might give out due to not enough fuel.

what gears exactly do i need for my 00 t/a with a4, i want 373 but idk if i should get gm or aftermarket and do i need a 3 series carrier
RamAirGod
08-28-2007, 08:40 PM
in my camaro i had to change carriers since they were 273's also. not sure if they make them the same for 2000 cars. i'd call hawks and just ask.
The EnforceR
08-28-2007, 10:50 PM
3.73 is the gear ya want but idk about al the other stuff, never ran into it.
01BlackBird
08-28-2007, 11:01 PM
if your car has a 2.73 gear from the factory you have a two series carrier if it has 3.23 you have a 3 series carrier. they make special gears to work for a 2 series carrier so you dont have to change it but the 3 series seems to be a little stronger and hold up a little better. hope this helps
MrDavid
08-28-2007, 11:01 PM
yep, 3.73 is all you. If you have a 2.73 rear now, you should see a huge difference. I can't honestly tell you which carrier you will need either. Calling hawks to ask is probably your best bet. I would definantly go with GM if I were you but a couple of guys are running different aftermarket setups that seem to work fine for them. Mine do not make any noise though, just FYI.
The EnforceR
08-28-2007, 11:32 PM
mine make ZERO noise and to the best of my knowledge they are GM
01BlackBird
08-28-2007, 11:34 PM
if you have a 2 series carrier and want 3.73 gears without changin the carrier you will have to go with a brand other than gm maybe try randys ring and pinion

I have heard that the 2 series carrier is weaker, but I have also heard that is BS. Jeg's and Summit have 3.73's for a 7.5" 10 bolt in both a 2 and 3 series carrier setup, so their is no need to change carriers unless one is stronger than the other. The only way to find out is to run the codes on the car to see what it was equipped with. I have a Camaro white book, but it only goes to 97 and I dunno if it works for T/A's also. If the factory tag is still on the rearend, run the numbers on it and see. I did the same thing, and mine turned out to be a 2.73 which is a 2 series carrier.

01BlackBird

3.08 and lower (actually a higher gear) are 2 series carrier. 3.23 and up are 3 series carrier the difference in the gear is the 3.73 for a 2 series carrier have to be special made and they are actually thicker (some say they are stronger but not enough to change over) to make them work with a 2 series carrier. the 3 series is supposed to be a little stronger but its not enough to ever help you or waste your money on changin (unless you just want to make the whole rear new) so for the sake of savin money and gettin the same results get 2 series 3.73 gears. oh and make sure you order them for the right year models the rear isnt a 7.5 its actually a 7.625 and thats what the gears are for (just to save you the trouble of returning them)

Summit has what you need...they may not be the cheapest but here it is. Richmond ring and pinion set Gm 10-Bolt 7.5/7.625 1.438" diameter, 27 spline pinion.
2 series carrier is pn: RMG-4900071 and its $199.88.
3 series carrier is pn: RMG-4900461 and its $195.95.
I would also recommend an installation kit complete with bearings and also synthetic gear lube. Richmond recommends pn: RMG-8310441 for the installation kit. It is $99.95 and you'll also need gear lube, its not included with that particular kit.
Also, Orielly's sells installation kits a little more reasonable than Summit, you might want to check them out on the install kit.

$78. I have bought two of them in the past year. 2 gear swaps, not because something was wrong with them.

nice try. 3.73's were only $90 and I sold them to Chris for the same price so I could upgrade to 4.10's. And I was saying I have bought two installation kits, which aren't made by GM.....Duh!

I think that is a good ballpark estimate anyway. Maybe i'm off, wouldn't be the first time. Hell, I would have never guessed Kyle's car would have made over 400 but I was wrong about that one.

I think you can rest assure that it is cranking out at least 500 on the sauce. I really wouldn't be surprised if you are a little over 400 on motor alone. You need to find out what the exact curb weight of your car is.
